Mrs. Wright’s becomes a complex conundrum to solve for the sheriff, the county attorney, as well as the general public. However, two women, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, unravel the mystery behind the murder by interpreting and connecting complex clues left by Mrs. Wright before and after the act, while the sheriff and the county attorney were pursuing different strategies to understand the crime. On the other hand, the Poof by Nottage involves a woman Loureen, whose abusive husband, Samuel, dies after she wishes him death. The confusion that follows after the event prompts to call, Florence, neighbor and partner in crime to seek advice regarding the manner she supposed to handle the matter. However, Florence reveals that the two were working on similar strategy concerning on the manner to handle their abusive husbands only for Loureen to prematurely utilize it on her partner. The above description of the two plays reveal a wide range of similarities.
Trifle by Susan Glaspell and Poof byLynn Nottage have a compelling similarity in the plot and themes utilized to communicate different messages to the audience. The plays revolve around women, who had murdered their abusive husbands, as well as others who help in articulating the story. In Triffle, Mrs. Wright had murdered her husband, while Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters carefully connects symbols to unwrap the cause of the woman’s action hence deliver the playwrights message to the audience. Nevertheless, primary objective of Glaspell, which seems to be focused on the equality of female to male, is completely different to that Nottage that is centered on thinking before acting. Therefore, Nottage by articulating a different message, proves that her work is not a revision of Glaspell’s play, despite utilizing similar literary elements and techniques hence the similarities might be coincidental.
